His lawyer speaks of a family drama and the police confirm that version. The attacks are said to have been aimed at the family of his ex-wife. He could not accept their divorce. 'Dramatic scenes' At around 17:10, the fire brigade in Essen was called out to fires in two houses, just a few minutes apart. A fire department spokesman spoke in German media of dramatic scenes. The exits were blocked and children stood crying at the window waiting to be rescued. Most of the 31 injured are suffering from respiratory problems due to smoke inhalation. Among the seriously injured are two children aged 2 and 4. Their lives are in danger. Shortly after the fires broke out, a man drove a van into two shops not far from the burned-out houses. He got out and threatened the people present with a knife and a machete. Police arrested the man, reportedly after he was restrained by bystanders. None of the people in the stores were injured.
